The South Harrison Community School Corporation Board of Trustees held its March meeting this week, covering important updates, celebrating outstanding staff and student achievements, and looking ahead to upcoming events. Here are the key highlights from the meeting:
Shout-out to South Central Elementary School
South Central Elementary School Principal Michael Rhoads shared how SCES is embracing this year’s theme, "Dare to Be Great." This theme is guiding the school's focus on academic success, student engagement, and leadership development. SCES is implementing strategies to support early literacy growth, student collaboration, and positive school culture. Through innovative teaching practices and a strong sense of community, SCES is helping students build confidence, set goals, and take ownership of their learning.
SCES continues to emphasize family and community involvement, recognizing that strong partnerships create a more supportive learning environment. Principal Rhoads highlighted the hard work of teachers and students, reinforcing the school's commitment to excellence and student success.
Hellos and Goodbyes: New Hires, Retirement Announcements
South Harrison is excited to welcome Shayla Broughton as the new Communications Specialist for the district. In this role, Shayla will:
Manage and enhance district-wide communication strategies
Oversee social media, press releases, and website updates
Assist in event promotion and internal communications
Work closely with schools and staff to share success stories
With experience in digital marketing, public relations, and community engagement, Shayla will help streamline communication efforts and strengthen connections between the district, families, and the community. Welcome to South Harrison, Shayla!
The board also accepted the resignation of longtime math teacher Michael Uhl, who will retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Mr. Uhl is well-known for building strong relationships with students and championing their success both in and out of the classroom. His dedication and impact on generations of students will not be forgotten. Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement, Mr. Uhl!
SHCSC Transportation Department is Expanding
A resolution was approved by the Board to extend hours for our committed corporation bus drivers. The extension increases bus driver hours to 25 per week, ensuring that dedicated staff members are supported in their work.
Also, South Harrison is currently looking for a Traffic Controller to assist with morning and afternoon traffic flow at the Corydon campus.
Position Details:
Hours: 7:30 - 8:00 AM & 3:00 - 3:30 PM
Pay: $42.20 per hour
Part-time position (No benefits)
Must pass a nationwide criminal history check
Key Responsibilities:
Direct traffic to ensure smooth and safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
Assist students in crossing streets safely.
Communicate effectively with students, staff, and drivers.
Work in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.

Continued Progress on Facility Upgrades
The Board also reviewed several ongoing construction projects across the district, reaffirming their commitment to improving South Harrison’s infrastructure. Recent projects include:
Athletic facility upgrades, including new bleachers and field enhancements.
Classroom renovations to create modern, engaging learning environments.
Safety and security improvements at multiple campuses.
The Board remains focused on ensuring South Harrison students have access to top-notch facilities that support both academic and extracurricular success.
