Students aren’t the only ones expanding their knowledge at South Harrison, our teachers are too! In order to stay up to date on the latest and most effective approaches to learning, teachers participate in curriculum meetings held twice a year. These sessions are led by curriculum directors Diane Owen and Allison Schalk, bringing together educators from both elementary and secondary levels.

During the meetings, teachers collaborate on what’s working for students based on proficiency data, address common learning challenges they notice in their classrooms, explore new teaching approaches, and engage in curriculum development workshops.

Last week, the district held a curriculum meeting where teachers focused on increasing student engagement and keeping learning fun. As Diane Owen emphasized to the group, Learning is not a spectator sport. This idea is what truly drives the way we approach teaching our students through first hand experiences and hands-on learning opportunities.

With that in mind, teachers further explored ways to teach English Language Arts through small-group activities, interactive reading cards, reading in pairs, and other engaging approaches. This style of teaching is supported by data showing progress among students participating in literacy groups.

Additionally, educators reviewed curriculum frameworks across different subject areas, reviewed student proficiency data and ILEARN scores, and collaborated to identify challenges and possible solutions.

Teachers at the secondary level also participated by focusing on proficiency indicators, learning targets, common formative assessments, and exploring how AI can be used in the classroom to create more engaging and meaningful learning experiences. At the end of the day, teachers left with new ideas and unique approaches to apply to their classrooms.

Oftentimes, we talk about creating a learning environment that is safe, supportive, and successful for our students. However, that is something we strive to uphold for all members of our South Harrison community. By providing educators with a safe environment to learn, reflect, and grow, it inspires them to do the same for their students. That is what we are all about here at South Harrison Community School Corporation.
